- Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life - Confucius
- Be so good they can't ignore you. - Steve Martin
I take a stand here and go with skill. There are many things I have been passionate about and even pursued some of them to my satisfaction. Yet skill is the option I would choose every time.
Let’s be realistic. For each Steve Jobs, Tom Cruise, Indra Nooyi and their like, there are a million people that do a common job and live a common life. It isn’t that they we are not passionate. It’s just possible that our passions lie elsewhere. All passions don’t make a career. And who’s to say that any of those that actually have achieved financial/career success are passionate about the jobs they do?
Passion is an emotion and it waxes and wanes like the tides through life. That’s why, not everyone is married to his or her college sweetheart for life; or that almost no one keeps the first car they bought; or that we change our job even after being enthusiastic about it for years.
Skill is a tool for life. You learn the alphabet and you can hone your skills to be a writer some day. If you expand your knowledge in physics and you can be part of the team to send a spaceship to the next galaxy. Once you’ve learnt to ride a bicycle, you can only get better with practice.
And here is the most exciting advantage of skill. The better you get at it, the more you will be recognized for it, the more pride you will take in it and the more passionate you will get about it.
Passion, on the other hand, has to be bolstered with skill. You want to be a singer, cultivate that voice; you want to be a teacher, develop patience beyond compare; you want to be the CEO of your company, develop business acumen and people management skills. Whatever you’re passionate about, you have to develop the skills for it.
If Michelangelo, with all his passion, were terrible with a brush, we wouldn’t have the exquisite ceiling of the Sistine chapel.
Passion requires Skill to succeed.
Skill develops Passion to succeed.
